Pistachio tree pruning

Pruning is actually the training of trees that takes place in different ways. Pistachios, like most trees, need pruning that takes place at different times. Like most trees, pistachios have a winter dormancy period, which is pruned every year during the dormancy period. This pruning will make the tree not give all its energy to the extra branches and become less weak, as well as the remaining buds on the tree will be strengthened. Pruning is done after the leaves fall and before the buds emerge. Iranian Pistachio

Pistachios, usually for fruiting, are pruned in two ways, first, head pruning, which is the cutting of extra branches and branches from the cutting site. This type of pruning in big trees causes small branches to appear on three to five year old branches. In this type of pruning, you must keep at least one of the growth buds on the tree. This pruning is done to prevent excessive growth and to help the tree to be more fruitful.

Another type of pistachio pruning is thin branch pruning. In this method, the branches are removed from the roots to reduce the number of branches in the tree. This type of pruning allows sunlight to shine easily into the branches and increases the growth of fruitful branches and increases fruit production. This type of pruning is also to limit the size of the tree, which should be done annually.

An important thing to note about pistachio tree fruiting pruning is to do summer fruiting pruning for young trees before fruiting. In general, tree pruning should be done in winter, when the tree is asleep and has no buds, because this may damage the tree and its buds.

Pistachio pests and diseases

Like many trees, the pistachio tree has diseases and pests that reduce the yield and prevent the growth of the tree. Among the pests of these trees, we can mention the most common ones, i.e. pistachio wood-eating moth, pistachio fruit-eating moth, pistachio leaf-eating moth, pistachio skin-eating moth, pistachio psyllium, etc. All kinds of weevils, mites, and mites are among the diseases that pistachio trees suffer from. To fight these diseases, you must use biological methods and chemical spraying.

Among the other diseases that affect the pistachio tree are pistachio rot, gomoz disease (it is pistachio root rot), wilting of flowers and branches, aflatoxin wilting, drying of pistachio branches and branches, etc. Use chemicals.

The need to use suitable pistachio fertilizers during the sleeping season

Fertilizing the pistachio tree is one of the important things to do in winter. Failure to use fertilizer causes the branches to become weak and thin, and in spring, which is the season of germination, the number of vegetative buds decreases and the yield decreases. Iranian Pistachio

Suitable fertilizers for pistachios in the winter season include three categories of chemical fertilizers, animal fertilizers and micronutrient fertilizers, which are very important to use correctly and in the right amount. Excessive use of fertilizer will cause excessive thickening of branches and damage to vegetative buds, and incorrect use of fertilizer can also reduce absorption. Therefore, in the following, we will discuss the correct method of using these fertilizers.

What is the best method of fertilizing in winter?

One of the most essential fertilizers that should be used are phosphorus fertilizers. Among the phosphorus fertilizers, simple super phosphate fertilizer is due to its low price, suitable and acidic pH, and the presence of calcium and sulfur in it. It is one of the best types of phosphorus fertilizers that can be used.

Considering that phosphorus fertilizers, unlike nitrogen and ammonium fertilizers, do not have much mobility; If they are poured on the ground and then irrigation is done, this phosphorus will not be absorbed by the roots. Therefore, one of the correct methods of using fertilizer for pistachios in this season is to dig holes in grooves around the tree and sprinkle phosphorus fertilizers on the bottom of the channel, that is, on the hairy roots.

So far, we have explained the normal and usual procedure of fertilizing pistachio gardens, but despite all these works, the tree may face a lack of nutrients for any reason, and in the pistachio tree, like other plants, the lack of various elements occurs with different symptoms, which are as follows. We will discuss this issue in detail.

What is the role of nitrogen in pistachios and the symptoms of its deficiency in pistachios?

Fertility of pistachio trees is highly dependent on nitrogen, and its deficiency limits the growth and production of pistachio crops. Also, since the main role of nitrogen in pistachios is the production of plant proteins, its deficiency has a detrimental effect on the quality of the product. Although the price of fertilizers like 20 20 20 is lower than some other fertilizers, its use will have a great effect, especially on pistachio trees.

Nitrogen deficiency in the pistachio tree with symptoms such as general growth reduction, narrowing of newly grown branches, reduction in the number of crops in the cluster, reduction in the number of leaves, fading of new leaves, yellowing of old leaves and formation of brown and red seeds. The color appears on the leaf.

Suitable fertilizers for pistachios

The importance and role of potassium in the pistachio tree

Potassium is very important for the growth of strong and healthy leaves. So that potassium deficiency shows itself in early to mid-summer with pale and yellow leaves, smaller old leaves with burnt margins and scattered foliage. Also, with a decrease in the potassium level, the yield (quantitatively and qualitatively) decreases.

After nitrogen, the most important element consumed by the pistachio tree is potassium. According to the estimates made; For every 1000 kg of harvest, 24 kg of fertilizer is absorbed by the trees.

Magnesium deficiency, which is more common in calcareous and heavy alkaline soils, shows itself by analyzing the leaves, which, of course, is difficult to diagnose and requires more special investigations. Boron deficiency is also severe early in the season and in some areas. It shows itself with yellow and untidy leaves.

Important micronutrients for the pistachio tree and their deficiency symptoms

Calcium; The most important micronutrient for pistachios

Calcium is very important in the growth and development of pistachio tree roots. If the amount of calcium in the soil is low, the root will not grow much. In pistachio trees with calcium deficiency, the young leaves near the end of the branch are wrinkled and the tips of the leaves and their margins are rolled up and down.

Calcium deficiency in pistachio trees usually happens due to lack of proper transfer in the plant. In fact, the main problem of calcium deficiency in pistachio is not its lack in the soil, but its transfer inside the plant.

Symptoms and effects of zinc deficiency

Zinc deficiency is more common in areas that have a history of using animal fertilizers. In the case of zinc deficiency in pistachio trees, the terminal leaves become small and yellow, the edges of the leaves are irregular and the yield is reduced.

Under what conditions did copper deficiency occur and what are its symptoms?

Copper deficiency, which occurs mostly in sensitive alkaline soils and mostly in young trees, manifests itself with symptoms such as burns on the edges and tips of leaves and falling leaves.

The challenges of pistachio production in Iran were investigated

Hamed Salari

The challenges of pistachio production in Iran were investigated

Kerman - IRNA - Iran's pistachio has a fierce competitor in the world market, which in the past years has stolen the production sphere from Iran by increasing the productivity of this product in various ways.

Iranian Pistachio

According to IRNA, for this purpose, the Green Gold Challenges Conference was held in Kerman, one of the major hubs for the production of this product, on Wednesday under the auspices of Keshavarz National Chemical Company. and more than 70% of the annual production of this product is available to these 2 countries.

In 2016, Iran snatched the competitive sphere of pistachio production and export from the United States, but after that, it faced a sharp decline; A decline that took a year and a half to bring us back the lost global markets.

On the other hand, pistachios are considered as a strategic and valuable product in the country's economy, and Kerman Betanhai province produces more than half of this product; Nearly 200,000 hectares of pistachio orchards are cultivated in Kerman province every year, but it does not have the necessary efficiency and production compared to its global competitor, because the lack of proper productivity in the production of this product is strongly felt.

The harvesting of 350 tons of pistachios per hectare against the production of more than 2 times the competitors shows the depth of the weakness of our agriculture, which has made the need to increase attention and planning for it more visible than ever.

Despite the structural weakness in Iran's agriculture, these days America produces three times as much as Iran despite having a third of the cultivated area, and it is considered the world's major producer of pistachios, followed by Iran.

Pistachio, which was once the monopoly of a few provinces, especially Kerman, is now planted with the welcome of farmers in 27 provinces of the country, and in fact, with this policy, Iran, while guaranteeing its pistachio production in the coming years, seeks to regain its past position in the world markets. is to step into the field with more power this time.

Unfortunately, despite the fact that most of the pistachio orchards, especially in Kerman province, as the production hub of this product, have been affected by aging, drought, pests, and various diseases, and this has also reduced the quality and quantity of our production, but all the eyes of hope in Iran's development The production and acquisition of global markets is aimed at modern agriculture, water supply and new gardens in 27 provinces of the country, which can realize the visions according to the geographical and natural conditions.

In addition, the introduction of knowledge into the field of agriculture by identifying pests and diseases of gardens and producing poisons and fertilizers for farmers is considered a way to continue the knowledge-based policy of Iran's agriculture and pistachio affairs, which has recently taken valuable steps for the growth of this field.

In this context and considering the importance of this strategic product, on Wednesday, the pistachio challenges conference was held in cooperation with the National Pistachio Association and with the efforts of the National Chemical Company at the Pars Hotel in Kerman. Some officials of knowledge-based companies, manufacturers and exporters were also present in this conference, and solutions to overcome the challenges of this product were investigated and assessed.

Everything about planting, growing and harvesting pistachios

Zero to hundred pistachio breeding

Breeding pistachios from zero to one hundred!

Growing pistachios is very valuable because pistachios are one of the favorite foods of most people in the world. The interesting thing about pistachios is that eating too much of them does not cause illness and does not harm your health. Most people believe that growing pistachios is a difficult and difficult task, while they are very wrong. In this article, we intend to describe pistachio growing completely from the beginning to its packaging and sale. Iranian Pistachio

The only significant point for growing pistachios is the long period of its growth. When you start growing pistachios, you have to wait between 5 and 8 years until you get a suitable product. But considering the high value of pistachio and its ability to export, it can be said that it is really worth waiting for a good product. If you are ready to endure this patience, stay with us in the rest of the article!

Where is the right place to plant pistachios?

Suitable areas for growing pistachios are areas with cold winters. But not the winter that is freezing. Also, that area must have a hot summer and some rain. Semi-arid desert locations are ideal areas. Pistachio prefers the air temperature to be more than 37 degrees Celsius. Also, pistachios do not like high areas. Because high areas often have low temperatures and pistachios do not survive in temperatures below 9 degrees below zero. Wet areas are not suitable for planting and growing pistachios.

Should I plant pistachio seedlings or pistachio seeds?

You can plant both pistachio seeds and pistachio seedlings. Planting pistachio seeds may take several years to bear fruit. Therefore, if you are impatient like me, I recommend you to use pistachio seedlings.

Planting seedlings

Plant in pairs!

A female pistachio tree needs a male tree to produce nuts. Normally and empirically, you need to plant 1 male tree for every 15 female trees. But the problem is that it is difficult to distinguish male and female seedlings before 7 years. Often, to make sure that a pistachio seedling is among the female ones, they plant several male-looking seedlings to make sure that there is a male seedling.

Read more about determining the sex of a pistachio plant in the early stages.

planting seeds

If you have decided to plant pistachio seeds instead of planting seedlings, you should pay attention to the fact that you must buy raw seeds. To buy a suitable seed, you can buy it from a reputable seed store. To grow pistachio and turn it into a mature tree, pay attention to the following points:

Moisten a towel or napkin and put the seeds in it. From time to time, it is not bad to move the top of the seeds to allow air to flow through the napkin.

Keep the wet towel at room temperature and wait a week for the seeds to germinate.

When the seeds start to germinate, it is better to transfer them to a small cup or pot. Make sure that the bottom of the pot has a hole for water to escape. The lack of proper drainage and pores causes the seed to die before it reaches the growth stage. Pay attention not to water the pot too much.

After the passage of time and proper rooting of the young seeds, you should transfer them to bigger pots. They should be kept in those pots until they reach the level of seedlings and then plant them outside.

The need for sunlight and soil nutrients

The best place to grow pistachios is where the sun shines fully. Pistachio cultivation requires nutty soil. Also, for the proper growth of seedlings, you must adjust the acidity or alkalinity of the soil. Pistachios like soil with a pH between 7 and 7.5. This amount means that the soil acidity is neutral.

Aban Kala's special offer: "How to measure soil pH with our own household equipment?" "

The distance between pistachio trees

The pistachio tree can grow up to 10 meters, so you should pay attention to the distances when planting. Plant seedlings at a distance of 4 to 5 meters and leave a distance of 5 to 6 meters between rows. Be careful not to disturb the electric wire or other objects around your seedling.ش
